Making Decisions...after the loss of a baby
Naming?
Referring to your baby by name identifies him/her as a real person.
After an early pregnancy loss the gender of the baby may be unknown. In this situation some
parents still rather to refer to their baby by name, choosing a name that can be used for either a
boy or a girl.
SANDS (Vic) does provide a naming certificate for you to record your baby's name at a cost of 50c
each.

Seeing & Holding?
Sometimes parents may initially be fearful and
hesitant but for most, seeing and holding their
baby becomes a treasured memory...These
memories are reinforced if sensitive photographs
of the experience are taken, especially if these
include other family members holding the baby.
After early pregnancy loss there may be no
identifiable baby. Memories can, however, be
created from mementos of the experience ...a toy,
special plants, ultrasound photos, cards, etc.
Birth Registration?
Newborn death
Any baby "who shows any sign of life after being born" must be
registered as a live birth regardless of length of the pregnancy.
When a baby dies in the neonatal period, with in 28 days of
birth, both a birth and a death certificate are issued.
Stillbirth
Any baby who dies before birth at or after the 20th week of
pregnancy be registered as a stillbirth. As no separate death
registration is required only a birth certificate can be issued.
Miscarriage
Any baby who dies before birth before the 20th week of
pregnancy is considered by law to have no legal identity.
These babies can not be registered and, therefore, no
certificates can be issued. If the baby "shows any sign of life
after being born', he/she must be registered.
Creating Memories
When a baby dies a lifetime of hopes and dreams
for that child are shattered. Trying to deny or
ignore what has happened does not help the pain
of sadness to be resolved. The experience of
many parents today indicates that creating a
tangible focus for grief and acknowledging the
baby, rather than trying to forget or ignore, is more
helpful in managing their feelings over time. Many
parents who did not try to remember or
acknowledge their baby have later expressed
deep regret for not having done so.
